Names by Daniel Patrick Simmons

For those of you starting a business, launching a product, or naming a service consider these few notes I jotted down from Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind by Al Reis & Jack Trout.

  • The most common names of brands/products/services start with the letters S C P A T
  • The least common names of brands/products/services start with the letters X Z Y Q K
  • One of every eight English words starts with the letter S
  • One of every 3,000 English words starts with the letter X

Reading this makes sense of why, in a flooded marketplace, company names like Xanga, Zynga, YouTube, Quora, and Kickstarter are raising to the surface—they're unique in service and name.

On the more common end of the spectrum, we see 100+ year old companies* with names like State Street Corp. (financial services), Chevron Corp., Pepsico Inc., Alcoa Inc., and Torchmark Corp. (financial services).
