If the client work you deliver misses the mark, you have failed.
You are a designer, but first and foremost you are a detective. As a detective it is your job to listen to your client and decipher the needs from the wants. The challenge is this: as people we don't always know what we need and how to communicate it. However, with the right questions, good listening, and checking for understanding you can accurately align yourself with the desired vision and goals of a project.
As the designer it's 100% your responsibility to uncover client's needs and deliver work that accurately translates those needs.
You are a detective first, designer second.
